Skin Fermented Riesling 2023

CA$26.10

Released: September 20, 2024

What it is
Our take on orange wine—essentially Riesling grapes treated like red grapes in the cellar. Instead of gently pressing the grapes, we crushed them and let them ferment - skins, pulp, seeds and all - for 10 days. This process extracts many compounds out of the skins including aromas and tannins, deepening the colour of the wine and giving it an herbal, tannic finish much like a cocktail bitter. Unlike many hazy orange wines, this Riesling was filtered to fully unleash its punchy aromatics.

Where it was grown
Wendell Vineyard, Lake Country, Okanagan Valley

When it was grown
The 2023 growing season brought extreme weather and a small crop of grapes. It started in December of 2022 when an outbreak of arctic air damaged many of the fruitful buds on our grapevines. Spring was cool and dry and then summer arrived to deliver one of the hottest and driest growing seasons on record. A few vines collapsed in the heat while most set a small crop of concentrated grapes. Ripening sped along through August and our entire harvest was condensed into the month of September.

How it was made
We took the same grapes we harvested for our regular Riesling wine but instead of gently pressing the grapes, we simply crushed them and let them ferment on their skins, pulp and seeds for 10 days. This process extracts many compounds from the skins, deepening the colour of the wine while adding structure and complexity. It was aged on the lees in neutral oak barrels for 9 months to refine the mid-palate and extend the finish.

How it tastes
Dried orange, star anise, cinnamon and oolong tea are prominent in this complex wine. On the palate it is dry with medium acidity and a potpourri-like finish.

Best served with a slight chill: refrigerate for only 20-30 minutes prior to serving.

This new release is only available in our wine shop or on our website while quantities last.
