Skin Fermented Riesling 2024 (Orange Wine)
What it is
Our take on orange wine—Riesling made using red wine techniques. Rather than gently pressing the grapes, we crushed them and fermented them on their skins, pulp, and seeds for 16 days. This extended skin contact extracted colour, tannin, and aromatic compounds, creating a wine with vibrant texture and an herbal, bitters-like finish. Unlike many hazy orange wines, this Riesling was filtered to showcase its bright, expressive aromatics.
Where it was grown
BCVQA Okanagan Valley - Lake Country. Grapes were sourced from Ritchie Vineyard.
When it was grown
The 2024 vintage was defined by resilience. A severe Arctic outflow event in mid-January dropped vineyard temperatures to -25.5°C, destroying most fruitful buds and killing many vines. While much of the crop was lost, a handful of hardier varieties survived, allowing us to harvest a small quantity of locally grown fruit.
The growing season that followed was relatively cool, producing grapes with vibrant natural acidity. Much of the year was dedicated to rehabilitating the vineyards and preparing the vines for a stronger 2025 season.
How it was made
The same Riesling fruit typically destined for our classic Riesling was instead vinified as an orange wine. After crushing, the grapes fermented on their skins, pulp, and seeds for 16 days, extracting colour, tannin, and layers of aromatic complexity. The wine was then aged for 12 months on lees in neutral oak barrels, adding texture through the mid-palate and extending the finish.
How it tastes
Lifted aromas of dried orange peel, mango, ginger, and caramel lead into a distinctly dry, textural palate with bright acidity and a long, potpourri-like finish.
Best served with a slight chill: refrigerate for only 20-30 minutes prior to serving.
