Pinot Noir 2023
What it is
A rich and full-flavoured Pinot Noir grown in the north and central Okanagan Valley.
Where it was grown
2/3 of the grapes were grown in Lake Country at Wendell Vineyard, Ritchie Vineyard, Friesen/Croft Vineyard. 1/3 of the grapes were grown at Savard Vines in Summerland.
When it was grown
The 2023 growing season brought extreme weather and a small crop of grapes. It started in December of 2022 when an outbreak of arctic air damaged many of the fruitful buds on our grapevines. Spring was cool and dry and then summer arrived to deliver one of the hottest and driest growing seasons on record. A few vines collapsed in the heat while most set a small crop of concentrated grapes. Ripening sped along through August and our entire harvest was condensed into the month of September. October was unusually quiet in the vineyard and winery. We enjoyed the downtime during the beautiful fall days, hoping for a mild winter ahead.
How it was made
The hot growing season had us scrambling to pick the Pinot Noir before the fruit became overripe. All the blocks were picked by mid-September. Fermentation took place in multiple batches using different yeast strains. The wine was aged in French oak barrels (20% new) for 9 months before blending and bottling in late 2024.
How it tastes
Blueberry, strawberry and eucalyptus aromas combine with subtle notes of leather and earth. It has a rich texture on the mid-palate and a note of caramel on the finish.
